Abseiling for RASASC at Cathedral Jubilee Fair 2011
GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL TOWER ABSEILING
Saturday 11th June 2011
Guildford Cathedral will celebrate its 50th year with a Jubilee Fair for all the family
- and during the day three RASASC volunteers (Jodie, Holly and Chairperson Cathie Smith)
will abseil down from its tower (160ft high!) to raise funds for us. The Jubilee Fair is free
and has many attractions for children so do come and join us to cheer them on!
Our Chair CATHIE SMITH
will be abseiling
wearing fancy dress and a video helmet!! You can sponsor her brave fundraising abseil online at
www.mycharitypage.com/cathie1rasasc
or via our display stall at the Fair itself.
Helpline Volunteers JODIE and HOLLY
will also be abseiling for us, at about 2pm. Again, you can sponsor our plucky and courageous
volunteers online or while visiting our display stall
during the Fair itself.

An A4 RASASC flyer publicising the event is now also available
to download for printing and displaying in offices and workplaces.
Do come and join us at the Jubilee Fair on Saturday 11th June
to cheer our abseilers as they descend! All sponsorships gratefully received will help to fund the cost of our having to
relocate our office in July.
Guildford Cathedral, which sits on Stag Hill, was consecrated in the presence of
HM The Queen on 17 May 1961. To mark its 50th anniversary the cathedral is now engaging in
a year of celebratory events including concerts. Its Jubilee Summer Fair will showcase the work of
over 25 local charities including RASASC, as well providing a day of free fun for all the family.
The Jubilee Fair attractions include school choirs and bands, dodgems, a land train, a hogroast,
abseiling from the tower by several charity fundraisers, and lots of children's activities such as
a children's entertainer, face painting, fairground rides on the green, and craft activities inside the
cathedral. There will also be emergency service vehicles, animals, a crockery smash, gladiators, a mega slide
and a 500 balloon race in mid-afternoon.

EVENT OUTCOME:
Sadly Cathie was unable to abseil due to illness from food poisoning two days before the event.
We are grateful to Gemma (daughter of volunteer Sheila) for stepping in and abseiling
on Cathie's behalf. Between them, Cathie [Gemma], Jodie and Holly raised over £850 in sponsorships. We thank them
and also thank several other volunteers who manned our stall during the day (where our donations box,
Children’s Game and Cathedral Cake "Guess-The-Weight" Competition raised a further £210).
A full report (with more photos) will be in our summer newsletter.
