Running for RASASC in the
London Marathon 2012

2010 Virgin London Marathon Logo   VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON
Sunday 22nd April 2012
From Greenwich Park to The Mall

There are two ways to "fun run" in the London Marathon - by being drawn in the annual online ballot (which closes 12 months before each marathon) or by running for a charity registered with the race organisers - called a "charity entry place". RASASC has a charity Silver Bond place enabling us to enter a runner every five years, starting with 2012 and then 2017 etc.

Nicola Henderson in training, 2011   Our Race Entrant:
Chosen last July, Nicola Henderson (pictured left, daughter of RASASC patron Anne Milton MP) will run as our fundraising entrant, and is being supported in training by Sarah Moore (of Allianz, Guildford). We are grateful to both women for their participation on our behalf.

You can sponsor Nicola's marathon run by donating online at www.mycharitypage.com/nicolahenderson or send a cheque to RASASC (London Marathon), PO Box 1009, Guildford, Surrey GU1 9EE, payable to RASASC. All donations in support, however small, are gratefully received.

The London Marathon Course is flat and therefore relatively fast. It starts in Blackheath, heads east through Charlton and Woolwich for three miles, then turns west and passes the Cutty Sark in Greenwich after six to seven miles. It crosses the River Thames at Tower Bridge and then loops around the east end of London, past Canary Wharf in Docklands, before heading west again along the Highway and the Embankment to enter Parliament Square, Birdcage Walk and the final corner in front of Buckingham Palace.

Plains below Mount Kilimanjaro   Update - Kilimanjaro First! (Nov 2011):  Prior to the London Marathon 2012 our selected runner Nicola will spend some days in January 2012 trekking on Mount Kilimanjaro, the largest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest in Africa. A dormant volcano rising majestically from the rolling plains of Tanzania to a peak of 5,895m (19,341ft), well above the cloud line, Kilimanjaro's upper slopes are deceptively dangerous having claimed more lives than Everest. Camping in the wild and acclimatising over a few days, she hopes to avoid altitude sickness and reach the summit in aid of RASASC. Donations in support of her attempt can be made at www.mycharitypage.com/nicolahenderson.

Update - Kilimanjaro Climbed! (Jan 2012):
Congratulations to Nicola, who sent an e-mail on Mon 16 Jan: "On Sunday at 9am I REACHED THE SUMMIT of Kilimanjaro! Definitely the hardest thing I've ever ever done in my life, and I expect harder than the marathon but we will see - altitude sickness hit me hard, but pushed through and the RASASC tee-shirt has now stood on the roof of Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world!" Expect pictures soon!

Other Upcoming Marathons

Our London 2012 place is now "fully booked" but other UK marathons exist that you can enter far more easily (including half marathons) - if wishing to "fun run" for RASASC, do contact us!

  ADIDAS WOMEN'S 5K CHALLENGE
Adidas 2011 Women's 5K Challenge Next run - September 2013
Hyde Park, London

The UK's best women-only fun-run (5km, 3¼miles) attracts some 15,000 entrants annually and raises huge sums for many charities. There will be no 5K Challenge in 2012 as its scheduling would have fallen between the London 2012 Olympic Games and the London 2012 Paralympic Games, but two supporters (Sheila and Gemma) ran for RASASC on Sunday 11 Sept 2011 and fundraised over £900 (read more).
