Our counselling services

Introduction

Counselling is the process of assisting and guiding clients to resolve problems and difficulties. It enables people affected by the trauma of rape or sexual abuse to come to terms with what has occurred. Any man or woman over the age of 16 affected by rape or sexual abuse and in need of counselling can ask to attend a RASASC counselling session. These are held at various times and locations on different days according to the type of counselling required.

RASASC offers three types of counselling: Individual Sessions with clients on a one-to-one (ie. face-to-face) basis, Support Sessions for partners and/or close family relatives, and full courses of same-sex Self-Help Group Meetings. Upon a request for counselling we arrange to meet the person for an initial assessment, so as to determine whether or not counselling is likely to prove helpful at this point in time. If you've never considered the benefits of counselling before, the testimonies of clients and staff will give you further insight.

Fully Trained Counsellors

At RASASC we employ only experienced counsellors and psychotherapists who have a minimum qualification of a Diploma in Counselling from a college or university recognised by BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and 100 hours general counselling experience. All of our counsellors are BACP or UKCP registered and we abide by the BACP Code of Standards and Ethics.

As an organisational member of BACP we are also bound by its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling Psychotherapy (as well as its Ethical Guidelines for Researching Counselling and Psychotherapy whenever we undertake any research) and are subject to its Professional Conduct Procedure at all times.

Relational Counselling (in One-to-One or Group)

We adopt a relational approach to counselling; this means that the only issues discussed during a session are those which are raised by the client. The counsellor will be non-directive, and the client will choose what she/he wants to talk about. Please note however that there may be a waiting list for sessions, depending on the current availability of counsellors.

To request counselling please call our Helpline, or if you have counselling needs that you wish to discuss in depth please contact our Counselling Manager.

Strict confidentiality is maintained at all times.
